Sometimes the most meaningful gifts come with a story, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at Goukoop, the community thrift shop proudly operated by Goukam Health APD.  What started a few years ago as an opportunity to empower one client through meaningful work has grown into a thriving initiative that benefits both the individual and the wider community.  Today, Goukoop offers a variety of affordable pre-loved clothing, shoes, household items and other donated treasures, giving quality goods a second life while supporting the work of Goukam Health APD.

The Goukoop journey began with a simple but powerful idea: create an opportunity for a person with a disability to develop skills, take responsibility and gain valuable work experience.  Over time, that small opportunity evolved into a successful project that continues to promote independence, confidence and personal growth.  The client who first joined the initiative now plays a key role in the day-to-day management of the shop, helping to ensure its smooth operation while developing valuable workplace skills.  Behind the scenes, a dedicated volunteer manages the storeroom, receiving and unpacking donations, sorting items and keeping stock organised.  This support helps ensure that the shop remains well-stocked and welcoming to shoppers.  As the project grew, so did its reach.  Goukoop expanded into the digital space with the introduction of a WhatsApp Shop, allowing customers to browse and purchase selected items online.  A second volunteer manages this platform, photographing items, communicating with customers and marketing products through WhatsApp.
