STRENGTHENING LEADERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE IMPACT: Advancing MANCOM Development to Support Resilient, Future-Ready Branches

We recently launched a comprehensive 10-week online Management Committee (MANCOM) Training Programme aimed at strengthening governance and leadership capacity within our branch structures.

The pilot training is currently being presented to potential and existing MANCOM members from George APD and Tembaletu Day Centre in Gugulethu.

This programme has been developed in response to the ongoing need for strong governance systems, clear leadership roles, and effective strategic oversight within community-based organisations serving persons with disabilities.  Through this initiative, we continue to equip MANCOM members with the knowledge and practical skills needed to fulfil their governance responsibilities effectively and ethically while positioning our branches to operate in an increasingly dynamic and resource-conscious environment.

Over the course of 10 weeks, participants engage in interactive online sessions covering a range of governance and organisational leadership topics.  Some of the key areas addressed include:

  • Good governance principles and ethical leadership.

  • Roles and responsibilities of management committees.

  • Legal and regulatory compliance for NPOs.

  • Financial governance and oversight.

  • Effective meeting procedures and decision-making.

  • Risk management and accountability.

  • Strategic planning and organisational sustainability.

The training also places emphasis on strengthening the understanding of the distinction between governance and operational management, enabling committees to provide strategic guidance and oversight while supporting staff appropriately in the implementation of branch objectives.  By continuing to build the capacity of our governance structures, we are supporting our branches in becoming more sustainable, accountable, and responsive, not only to the needs of persons with disabilities, but also to the broader social and economic context in which we operate.

The online format allows participants from different geographic areas to engage consistently over the 10-week period, while encouraging ongoing discussion, reflection, and peer learning, strengthening both individual leadership and collective impact across our network.

We recognise that strong governance remains fundamental to building resilient organisations.  As our operating environment evolves, so too must our leadership approaches, ensuring that our branches are equipped to deliver quality services, care for their people, act responsibly towards their environments, and plan strategically for long-term sustainability.

Organisations and individuals interested in strengthening their governance capacity are invited to connect with us at services@wcapd.org.za to learn more about participating in this programme.
