EMBEDDING SUSTAINABILITY INTO EVERYDAY PRACTICE: Strengthening Branch Systems Through Reflection, Planning and Shared Learning
Through our recent GROWS support visits to branches in the Southern Cape including Mossel Bay APD, George APD, Goukam Health, and Oudtshoorn APD we introduced a strengthened focus area within the programme: sustainability.
GROWS, which stands for Guide, Review, Oversee, Weigh, Sustainability and Innovation, continues to provide a structured yet supportive framework for strengthening branch development, with sustainability now more deliberately embedded in the process.
These engagements created valuable space for structured reflection and forward-focused planning, encouraging branches to consider sustainability beyond financial stability alone. While financial viability remains critical, the discussions emphasised a broader view, one that considers the overall strength and adaptability of the organisation.
Using our Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool, branches were guided to reflect across key organisational areas, including leadership, governance, partnerships, staffing, programme viability, operational systems, visibility, and innovation. This process allowed teams to take a holistic view of their current position, identifying both strengths to build on and risks that require attention.
The sessions encouraged open, honest reflection, with branches actively engaging in discussions around what sustainability looks like in their specific contexts. Importantly, this was not approached as a compliance exercise, but as a practical and supportive process designed to strengthen long-term organisational health.
As part of the engagements, branches began identifying priority actions and laying the groundwork for sustainability plans that can guide their development over the coming months. These plans are intended to support more resilient structures, improved systems, and greater responsiveness to the changing environments in which branches operate.
The visits also created an opportunity for shared learning and collaboration across teams, reinforcing the value of peer engagement and collective problem-solving. In this way, the GROWS approach continues to strengthen not only individual branches, but the network as a whole. At its core, this work reflects a growing recognition that sustainable organisations are those that are able to adapt, plan strategically, and remain responsive while continuing to deliver meaningful services to persons with disabilities and their communities. Sustainability is not a once-off intervention or a standalone project. It is an ongoing process; the ability to grow, adjust, and continue delivering impact consistently over time.
Through GROWS, we continue to create space for these important conversations, ensuring that our branches are supported to build strong foundations that will carry their work into the future.
