WHEN OUR BRANCHES SHOW UP FOR EACH OTHER: A Closer Look At Peer Support in Practice Across the WCAPD Network

Some of the most practical and meaningful learning takes place when branches engage directly with one another sharing experiences, insights and solutions grounded in real work.

This was clearly demonstrated through a recent engagement under the IWEALL approach, where staff from Breede Valley APD visited Witzenberg APD in April.  The visit created a valuable opportunity for peer-to-peer support, collaboration and knowledge exchange across key areas of organisational development.  During the session, guidance and practical input were shared on:

  • Good governance.

  • Financial management systems.

  • Exploring diverse fundraising opportunities.

  • Strengthening marketing strategies.

  • Reviewing HR policies and staff file management.

In addition, Witzenberg APD used the opportunity to seek guidance on their Skills and Work Programme, with the aim of further strengthening their service delivery and impact.  These kinds of engagements highlight the value of creating spaces where branches can learn from one another’s experiences, reflect on their own practices, and identify practical steps for strengthening their operations.  It reinforces a culture of shared responsibility, continuous improvement, and collective growth across the WCAPD network.

We are encouraged to see this level of collaboration between our branches, and through initiatives like IWEALL, we actively support and encourage this form of peer engagement.  It brings relevance, lived experience and practical insight into how organisations grow and evolve.  At the same time, it is important to note that while these engagements are highly valuable, they serve to complement, not replace, the structured developmental support provided by WCAPD.  Our role remains to guide, support and strengthen branches in a consistent and strategic manner, ensuring alignment, quality and long-term sustainability.

Ultimately, it is through this combination of peer-driven learning and structured organisational support that we continue to build a network of branches that are more resilient, better equipped, and able to deliver meaningful services to persons with disabilities in their communities.
