WHAT’S HAPPENING AT OVERSTRAND APD: A Round-Up of Momentum, Magic and Meaningful Inclusion

From the vibrant heartbeat inside the Bright Star Activity Group to the community pride ignited by the launch of the Hawston Mini Library for the Blind, Overstrand APD continues to show what is possible when people, purpose and inclusion come together.

Bright Star Activity Group: Where Confidence Sparks and Community Integrates

Step into the Bright Star Activity Group, and you are instantly met with the kind of warmth and energy that only grows when people feel truly at home.  As part of Overstrand APD’s adult daycare programme, Bright Star offers adults with disabilities a structured, stimulating and socially connected environment, but in reality, it is so much more than that.

Bright Star is a dynamic day programme built on engagement, creativity and shared experience.  It is a space where participants don’t simply “do activities”, they express themselves, discover new abilities, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being part of a group that welcomes them wholeheartedly.  From group tasks to creative sessions, every moment is crafted to encourage participation, foster connection and make each person feel valued.

The dedicated staff play a key role in this alchemy.  Through thoughtful support and affirming guidance, they ensure activities are accessible, meaningful and enjoyable, turning everyday interactions into opportunities for growth.

Bright Star’s ongoing contribution is quietly powerful: a daily reminder that inclusion begins with creating spaces where people feel seen, supported and encouraged to grow; spaces where confidence sparks, friendships form and community comes alive.

A Milestone for Accessible Learning: The Launch of the Hawston Mini Library for the Blind

On 3 March 2026, Hawston celebrated a landmark moment with the launch of the Hawston Mini Library for the Blind, a space designed to ensure that residents who are blind, visually impaired or face barriers to accessing information are no longer left behind.  The event brought together residents, partners and local leaders in a celebration filled with music, heart and unmistakable community pride.  The Fisherhaven Academy School Choir even improvised percussion using a dustbin lid, adding joyful symbolism to an already memorable day.

Speakers highlighted the profound importance of the initiative.

  • Alderman Arnie Africa celebrated Hawston Library’s long-standing role as “a library with heart” and affirmed that the new space shows no one is left behind.

  • Cecilia Sani, Director of Western Cape Library Services, underscored the responsibility of libraries to serve everyone, thanking the South African Library for the Blind for enabling access to audio books, accessible reading material, assistive technology and training.

The wider programme has already proven its value: Hermanus Library, part of the same initiative since 2022, now supports 95 members with access to specialised devices like Envoys and Daisy players.

At WCAPD, social workers are often the first point of contact for families trying to navigate unfamiliar territory; assessments, screenings, support needs, referral pathways, and the decisions that follow.  They help families understand options such as Skills and Work Centres, Adult Day Care programmes, community‑based services, and support groups.  They bring structure to chaos, encouragement to overwhelmed caregivers, and a steady voice into environments that are sometimes unstable or unsafe.

Beyond direct service, their contribution stretches across the entire WCAPD chain:

A Message of Congratulations from Overstrand APD & WCAPD

Overstrand APD and the Western Cape APD proudly congratulate the Municipality, library teams and all partners involved in bringing this transformation to life.  For the disability community in Hawston and the broader Overstrand region, this mini library represents far more than a new room or a new service, it is an investment in dignity, independence and possibility. It will:

  • Expand access to reading and information.

  • Provide adaptive technologies that support lifelong learning.

  • Improve inclusion for residents with visual impairments.

  • Complement and strengthen Overstrand APD’s ongoing work across the region.

As Sani beautifully expressed: “This mini library belongs to you. Please use it, grow it and help us make it even better.”

The Heart of the Matter

Whether it’s the daily magic unfolding in the Bright Star activity group or the powerful inclusivity symbolised by the new mini library in Hawston, community‑rooted inclusion is not an abstract idea, it is a lived experience.  It’s built through joyful interactions, accessible spaces, shared accomplishments and the belief that every person deserves a place to shine.
