TURNING CHALLENGES INTO CHANGE: Bergrivier APD’s Woodwork Project Success
When Charlton Ruiters joined Bergrivier APD in July 2022 as a driver, few could have predicted the remarkable journey that lay ahead. By 2023, Charlton had stepped into the role of Woodwork Manager, leading the Skills and Work Centre with determination and vision. His story is one of resilience, innovation, and the power of community support, a truly inspiring motivation for the year ahead.
A Workshop that Sparked Renewal Despite Challenges along the Way
In November 2024, Bergrivier APD hosted the Re‑Intervention Workshop. For Charlton, the experience was both daunting and motivating. Faced with pressure to improve on past years, he embraced the challenge with a clear plan: think outside the box, stick to the strategy, and re‑invent the woodwork section. The plan was bold: expand production of fire starters, introduce educational toys (edu‑blocks), and experiment with cement products like doorstoppers. With renewed energy, the team set to work, determined to transform ideas into action.
The journey was far from smooth. Pallet shortages stalled production, the saw machine broke down, and the transport truck, vital for collecting pallets, failed. To make matters worse, some beneficiaries left due to limited work. But Charlton refused to give up. He rallied his team, reached out to sponsors, re‑engaged long‑time clients, and knocked on the doors of local businesses. His persistence paid off!
Successes that Inspire
The turnaround was remarkable:
These victories not only revived the woodwork section but also strengthened community ties, proving that determination and collaboration can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
While the transport truck remains out of service, fundraising efforts are underway to restore it. Charlton is confident: “We will overcome that hurdle as well.”
His optimism reflects the spirit of Bergrivier APD – always moving forward, always finding solutions.
