SOWING SEEDS TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY: Overstrand APD’s Greenhouse Project

As part of their strategic objectives to promote sustainability and food security, Overstrand APD has initiated an exciting project to develop two greenhouses.  The initiative aims to equip beneficiaries with skills in gardening and food preparation, while also promoting self-sufficiency and independence.

This project is particularly significant in the context of South Africa, where food insecurity remains a pressing issue.  According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, approximately 23.9% of South Africa’s population suffers from moderate to severe food insecurity (FAO, 2020).

This project, which involves planting vegetables and herbs, has already seen 12 beneficiaries undergo training in horticulture and nutrition.  This practical experience not only builds their skills but also fosters a sense of community and co-operation.  By promoting food security and sustainability, we’re working towards a brighter future for individuals with disabilities.  In fact, research has shown that people with disabilities are more likely to experience food insecurity and poor nutrition due to various socio-economic factors (FAO, 2018).

The importance of initiatives like this greenhouse project cannot be overstated. Food security is a critical aspect of human well-being, and its impact extends beyond individual health to encompass economic and social stability.  A study by the World Food Programme found that every dollar invested in agriculture and food security generates approximately $2.50 in economic benefits (World Food Programme, 2019).  We’re absolutely delighted that Shoprite Checkers has bought into the project, recently visiting the site with the Department of Agriculture.  This partnership is set to further enhance the project’s impact and sustainability.  By working together, we can create a more food-secure future for all.

Key Highlights:

  • 2 greenhouses developed for vegetable and herb cultivation.
  • 12 beneficiaries trained in gardening and food preparation.
  • Partnership with Shoprite Checkers and Department of Agriculture.
  • Promoting food security, sustainability, and self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.

The initiative is a testament to the power of community-driven programmes and the importance of partnerships in driving positive change.  We’re excited to see the impact this project will have on the lives of our beneficiaries and the broader community.  Well done, Overstrand APD!
