Voice Harvesting:

Listening as a Pathway to Inclusion

At Western Cape APD, we believe that real inclusion begins with listening. In partnership with Voice Economy, we produced a Voice Harvesting Tool, a digital feedback platform designed to capture realtime reflections from staff across our business. This innovation is more than technology; it’s a commitment to inclusive governance and responsive service delivery.

Co-Created, Contextual, and Human-Centred

Developed through a participatory process with seven team members and four pilot branches, the tool was rolled out to all 20 APD branches in February 2025. Staff contributed voice notes, suggestions, and reflections shaping the tool in real time and ensuring it reflects the realities of their work.

Why it Matters

1

Natural and Empowering

Staff described the tool as ‘less intimidating’ and appreciated being asked ‘how we feel, not just what we do’.

2

Responsive and Respectful

Immediate updates based on WhatsApp feedback built trust and reinforced a culture of listening.

3

Relevant and Relational

High engagement and training attendance signal strong buy-in and operational relevance.

4

Inclusive and Connected

Branches reported feeling ‘seen and heard’, reducing isolation and strengthening cohesion.

One staff member said it best: “I’m excited about the tool as I am sure it will actually reflect what we do”.

A Strategic Investment in People

Voice Harvesting is not just a feedback tool, it is a foundation for inclusion, a mechanism for connection, and a mirror of our values. It reflects WCAPD’s evolving identity; one that listens deeply, acts collaboratively, and leads with empathy.

Skills Development/Training Programmes

Training management committee members in good governance practices, including their constitution, services conditions, and policies, to ensure ongoing compliance, sustainability, and accountability.

Extensive and Special Governance and Support (EGS) Programme

Providing individualised and specialised management support and training to branch management committees dealing with non-compliance issues related to good governance practices, constitution adherence, and eligibility of volunteers.

Our focus is on rectifying current non-compliance, preventing future issues, and ensuring the sustainability of branches.

Quarterly Managers’ Forums

Quarterly managers’ forums provide a platform for programme/facility-based management teams to engage in disability sensitisation, information sharing, discussions on related services, training, and sharing best practices.

Human Resource Guidance and Support

WCAPD offers human resource consultancy services to registered APD branches, covering occupational health and safety guidance, employment contracts, salary negotiations, interventions for misconduct and poor performance, presiding over hearings, training on human resource development topics, and mentoring branch managers for increased efficiency.
