FROM BARISTA TO BEST IN CLASS: Shaune Dreyer’s Journey Brews Success
Shaune Dreyer’s story is one of skill, determination, and the power of inclusive opportunity.
As a participant in Overstrand APD’s Work and Employment Programme, Shaune received hospitality training through a partnership with Martell Taylor, hospitality professional and trainer, funded by the Mellon Housing Initiative.
Despite living with a hearing impairment, she quickly stood out for her talent and work ethic, excelling as a Barista at Sun International’s Arabella Hotel & Spa near Hermanus.
A key part of Shaune’s development was her practical training at The Beanery Café, where she honed her barista skills in a supportive, real-world environment. This hands-on experience helped bridge the gap between training and employment, giving her the confidence and competence to succeed in a high-end hospitality setting.
Now, Shaune has secured permanent employment at Arabella and is heading to Johannesburg to compete among the best in her field. This is more than a personal achievement, it’s a powerful example of what’s possible when inclusive training, employer partnerships, and individual drive come together.
Congratulations, Shaune! And thank you to Arabella Hotel & Spa and The Beanery Café for championing inclusive employment in the open labour market.
