PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: WCAPD AND URBAN EARTH: Exploring Inclusion at the Intersection of Climate Change

As 2025 draws to a close, WCAPD reflects with gratitude on its partnership with Urban Earth, a collaboration that has opened doors to new projects and programmes, empowering our organisation to think boldly about inclusion in the context of climate change. For some members of the APD family, conversations around LGBTQ+ inclusion are still evolving, and this collaboration is a natural extension of our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and creating safe, supportive environments for everyone we serve.

This phase of the relationship will conclude in early 2026, but the impact of the work will continue to ripple outward.

As part of our ongoing programme with Urban Earth, WCAPD is excited to announce a new collaboration with The Triangle Project. This partnership supports our work to foster inclusive spaces and opportunities for all, including LGBTQ+ individuals. It strengthens our focus on intersectionality and ensures our learning translates into practical, community‑centred initiatives. At a recent workshop, participants explored how intersecting forms of inequity shape vulnerability to climate change. The discussion highlighted the importance of recognising the specific needs of marginalised groups, particularly Black and Coloured women with disabilities and Black and Coloured LGBTQI+ individuals, in both South Africa and Nepal. By centring these voices, the project ensures that risk assessments and impact studies reflect lived realities rather than abstract data.

A significant portion of the workshop focused on identifying and assessing community assets critical to resilience. From healthcare clinics and gay‑owned businesses to transport services and social spaces, participants examined which resources are most vital for marginalised communities and how climate change threatens their accessibility. The conversation also extended to geographical challenges, including commuting barriers in Australia, and the need for improved infrastructure to support persons with disabilities.

The workshop underscored the importance of inclusivity in policy and practice, reminding us that climate risk is not experienced equally. By weaving together perspectives from diverse communities, the project has strengthened our understanding of how inequity and vulnerability intersect, and how solutions must be tailored to empower those most at risk.

We are deeply thankful to Urban Earth for this collaboration. Together, we have been able to explore new approaches, test innovative ideas, and expand our vision of inclusion. As this phase concludes in early 2026, we carry forward the lessons learned and the inspiration gained, confident that the seeds planted will grow into future programmes that continue to empower and uplift.
