UNLOCKING A UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE WESTERN CAPE: A Call to Action

As we once again reflect on Disability Rights Awareness Month, we are reminded of the importance of creating inclusive spaces that promote equality and dignity for all. At  Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities (WCAPD), we applaud the innovative initiatives being driven by the Western Cape Department of Social Development and its partners.

The Disability Accessibility Mossel Bay (DAM) initiative, launched by Mossel Bay Municipality late last year, is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and a commitment to universal accessibility.

By providing a 5-star rating system for public spaces, DAM is empowering persons with disabilities to navigate their community with confidence and independence.

We share Minister Jaco Londt’s vision of turning the Western Cape into a disability-friendly province.  This requires a collective effort from government, businesses, and civil society to create accessible spaces that promote social and economic inclusion.

At WCAPD, we are dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of persons with disabilities.  We believe that universal accessibility is not only a moral imperative but also a sound economic strategy.  By investing in accessible infrastructure and services, businesses can tap into a growing market of consumers with disabilities, while also enhancing their reputation and social responsibility

We call on businesses, government agencies, and civil society to join us in this mission. Together, we can create a Western Cape that is truly inclusive and accessible to all.

Take action today:

  • Partner with us to develop accessible and inclusive programmes and services.
  • Invest in accessible infrastructure and technologies.
  • Provide training and capacity-building programmes for your staff on disability awareness and inclusion.
  • Support policies and initiatives that promote universal accessibility and inclusion.

Only if we work together, can we unlock a universally accessible Western Cape.
