Our Projects and Programmes

Raising Awareness

WCAPD places a strong emphasis on awareness and sensitisation as a vital service aimed at highlighting the experiences and unique needs of persons with disabilities.  Through this service, we strive to foster a deeper understanding and empathy towards individuals facing various challenges.

Our approach includes organising awareness campaigns, workshops, and training sessions for diverse audiences, including community members, businesses, educational institutions, and government bodies.  These initiatives are designed to promote inclusivity, reduce stigma, and encourage proactive steps towards creating a more accessible and supportive environment for persons with disabilities.  By raising awareness and sensitising stakeholders, we aim to build a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive and contribute meaningfully.

#OneLess Programme

#OneLess is a fundraising endeavour aimed at fostering unity among all APD branches. The programme integrates all services under a unified theme, extending its impact across diverse communities in the Western Cape.  Its primary objective is explicit: to diminish the incidence of disabilities, enhance the quality of disability services, and to alleviate concerns among individuals with disabilities.

#OneLess Accident

Distracted driving poses a significant risk on South African roads, leading to numerous injuries, fatalities, and disabilities.  Our #1Less Programme focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and educating drivers on safety measures to reduce the high fatality rates.  Irresponsible driving, especially texting while driving, contributes to a staggering number of accidents, causing over 500,000 injuries and 6,000 deaths annually.  Young drivers, in particular, are prone to distractions like phone calls, internet use, eating, and multi-tasking, leading to alarming road behaviours. These distractions not only endanger lives but also contribute to preventable disabilities and fatalities.  We urge everyone to join us in creating a safer transport environment by taking the pledge to avoid distracted driving, sharing our message on social media using #1Less, and encouraging others to do the same.

Together, we can save lives and prevent the heartbreaking consequences
of distracted driving accidents.

#OneLessNappy

The cost of nappies can be a significant burden for individuals with disabilities who experience bowel and urinary incontinence, often lacking the financial means to meet this essential need.

Moreover, the inability to use the bathroom independently can lead to exclusion from day care centres, schools, and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The #OneLessNappy Needed Programme, led by WCAPD and its registered branches, aims to raise awareness about the critical need for nappies for children and adults with disabilities.  The initiative encourages the public to collect and donate nappies to support those in need.

Running annually from October to November, the #OneLessNappy campaign takes various forms, including fun walks/runs or designated drop-off points at schools or companies where individuals can support. The collected nappies are then distributed to registered clients of APD branches, ensuring that they receive essential support and care.
